    RECENTLY ADDED:

On June 9th, Oak Hill PTA welcomes the Eastern Action Sports Team. This team of professional BMX box jump riders will present their Extreme Dream assembly to our Oak Hill Students. The Extreme Dream assembly will provide thrilling entertainment while presenting positive messages including bike safety, proper nutrition, character counts and anti-bullying.

On September 17, Oak Hill PTA welcomed Song and Dance Ensemble LUBLIN from Lublin, Poland. This ensemble of children, ages 12-15, represent their proud heritage and will delight our students with traditional dances accompanied by their own musicians. Song and Dance Ensemble LUBLIN will also be performing at the International Children’s Festival at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts the weekend of September 18th.

On October 5, Oak Hill PTA, partnering with the National Character Education Foundation, hosted Jon Pritikin, the founder of Feel the Power, a program that addresses bullying and peer pressure. He will be addressing students on the benefits of good character and will be sharing his compelling and adventurous story of how he overcame a speech problem, childhood hardships, and being bullied. Jon encourages students to be kind to one another and warns them about the harm in bullying and disrespecting each other. Students will be captivated by Pritikin’s presentation and feats of strength as he bends metal pipes and rolls up frying pans like a burrito which he currently holds the title for in the "2009 Guinness Book of World Records". The official record is "The tightest circumference of two aluminum frying pans rolled together with his bare hands in less than 30 seconds".

On December 1, Oak Hill PTA welcomed The Amazing Food Detective through the generous support of Kaiser Permanente. The Amazing Food Detective uses music, humor and puppets to educate children about healthy food choices, the power of activity and balanced diets. The following website offers additional information and informative links including a Teaching Guide: www.etpmidatlantic.org/?AFD-links.

On March 15, 2011, Oak Hill PTA welcomed James Gelsey who presented "Write Now!" Creative Writing Programs to our students. James Gelsey is the author of Scooby-Doo! Mysteries chapter books (45 titles and counting) published by Scholastic, Inc. His "WRITE NOW!" Creative Writing Programs inspire students to use their imaginations as they unravel the mysteries of the creative writing process. James will present the following programs:
    • FUNdamentals: The Basics of Creative Writing - This fun and fast-paced session introduces younger students to the basics of creative writing: main characters; settings; villains; and problems. Along the way, the students become bona fide authors as they create their very own "Scooby-Doo! Mystery". (Grades K-1)
    • JOURNEY OF IMAGINATION: A Guided Tour Through the Creative Process - Through active audience participation, students identify the parts of a story, brainstorm ideas, and discover how easy it can be to transform their ideas into stories. Students leave the session with an understanding of the creative process and ideas for original stories they can write in their classrooms. (Grades 2-3)
    • WHODUNIT: A Crash Course for Detectives-in-Training - Students identify the essential elements of a mystery, brainstorm ideas, and discover how to use the author's "secret formula" to design and solve mysteries on their own. Students take away an understanding of the creative process and a new set of creative writing "tools" that they can apply to a range of classroom writing assignments. (Grades 4-6)
